STREET DANGERS.

Remarkable figures are given by the London "Daily Mail" to show the aggravation of the danger ®f London traffic. The motor-cabs in 1906 numbered 96, to-day they number 1,035, and motor-bu3es have increased in two years from 500 to 1,120. Seven hundred heavy motor lorries ply in the area, to say nothing of horse vehicles and tram cars. Whereas 6,459 drivers' licenses were issued by the London County Council in 1903-4, 20,025 were issued in 1906-7.

During the busiest time of. the day, 900 motor vehicles bear down on Trafalgar Square in an hour, and in that time 600 motor-cars and motor-buses pass the Hank. It is estimated that since motor traffic began to expand, the dangers of street crossings have increased 50 per cent. Even to the nimble and wary, the crossing of a great thoroughfare during the rush hours i 3 perilous. To middle aged men and women and children it lias become a nerve-wracking ordeal. A momentary indecision is apt to be much more fatal now than when the vehie'ea were drawn by horses. There have been so many motor-bus accidents in London that a city M.P. intends tu introduce a tiill limiting che speed of all motor vehicles to ten miles an hour in public places, and six miles an hour where roads cross.
