IMPORTED TIMBER.

It i 5 because of the excessive rise in the price of local limber that the importation of Oregon pine has bicome profitable, says the Christchurch "Press." It is only fair to the smvmillers to say that the increased price is largely due to the fact that the mere accessible timber has been use:! up, and they have to go further back for supplies. O'jr timber is a wasting asset. Insufficient provision is made for replanting, and with the disappearance of the native forest sawmilling is becoming a vanishing industry. But that is no reason why the community as a whole should be penalised in order that the remains of our forests may be cleared off at a still more rapid rate. It would be more to the puroose if the Government were to undertake tin w„rk of re-afforestation on a real scientific and comprehensive scale.
