CHARGES OF PERJURY.

; THE CONNELLY CASE

BY TELEGRAPH—PKK6S ASSOCIATION,

WESTPORT, July 22

At the hearing of the charges of perjury again&t Connelly, to-day, evidence was given hy John West, who said he was at Ayre's Hotel on Friday night, May Sth, about 8 o'clock, and saw Connelly come in and purchase a bottk of beer and go out again. Connelly returned fifteen minutes later and pulled out a handkerchief all saturated with blood and made a remark, "He won't want any more bottles." Hugh Duncan, groomsmaa, recalled, said that he noticed footprints at the back of the shed where Bourke's body was found. A gate led from there into a paddock, which abutted on a right-of-way. There was a big mud hole at ths gate. Lily Pearce and Mrs Thos. Pearce detailed a conversation they had with Connelly in the kitchen of the fish Ehop about 8.20 p.m that night. Connelly had a sheath knife attached to his belt, and remarked that he had "laid one out on the wharf just now," and said he had had to get four stiches put in his finger. A witness named Weber gave evidence corroborating that given by Halinen and Andersen as to the time they were at the theatre. The evidence of Ivy Pearce was also in a similar direction.

J. Murray denied that any one else but Connelly and himself were at Qualter's, where it had been alleged by Connelly that he saw Hahnen and Andersen. Murray said he watched Connelly take Bourke across the road from Ayre's hotel; and that Connelly, and Connelly alone, took him. That he heard no whistle as Connelly left the hotel, and saw no one meet him in the street; that Connelly returned in fifteen minutes puffing and blowing and covered in mud. H. Haakensen said that he was with Halinen and Andersen all the evening, and none of them went, to Qualter's hotel. During the hearing of the case, today, Andersen was seized with an epileptic fit and was borne from the | Court.

The case was adjournec l till torn )rrow.
