THE PAKARAE SHOOTING CASE.
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
GISBORNE, July 21. Walter Symonds, charged with .-shooting with intent Mary Agnes .Petersen at Pakarae, on June 9th, was before the Police Court this morning. Miss Petersen detailed the incident -of the shooting, as already reported, .and was not cross-examined. Evidence was given by Dr Collins .as to the extent of the wounds, and • by Harold Millstead, groom, who was present immediately alter the shooting, and took the revolver from accused, the latter remarking: "It's -all right, Harry; i know what I have done." Nurse Gardiner deposed that she .had extracted the bullet from the 1 oof of the girl's mouth. John Robert Nicholls, deposed that .. he sold accused, on June Bth, the revolver produced. John R. Shaw, licensee of the deposed that when he arrived -on the scene he asked accused: "Did .you do that?" and he replied: "I 'did it, Mr Shaw, and am sorry for •it." Detective Rowle stated that when -accused was charged with the offence, he replied: "I don't know," and twenty minutes later, said, "1 auptUse they will put me in my place for a year or two for this, and prob.ably give me the rope." Constable Dandy said that when -accused asked whether the girl would get better, and added, "My God, I am sorry I did it," now I see her lying there like that." He subsequently remarked: "I suppose I will get ten years for this if Minnie gets better." Prisoner, who was represented by counsel, reserved his defence, and warcommitted for trial.
