THE WHAREAMA FISHERY.
It is cheerful to ncte that although the Masterto'i County Council is apathetic regarding the opening up of the road to the Whareama reserve, the Chamber of Commerce does not intend to let the matter drop. It is only by persistently hammering awuy at the question that any tangible result will be achieved. Cr Toogood said that there was no agitation in his riding for the opening up of the road—a fact which should not weigh with the authorities when there is a strong movement from a large urban district in favour of the idea. Mr Cruickshank mentioned at the recent Chamber of Commerce meeting that the statement thrt property owners were willing to give the necessary land was not correct. This is another matter which should not be allowed to exert too great an influence with the local body or department upon whom the responsibility will ultimately fall to say whether the road shall or shall not be opened.' The fact remains that' a populous country town, and for the matter of that neighbouring towns and districts, would welcome the opening up of a wates ing-place such as is available on the Whareama. As Mr J. C. Ewineton said at the Chamber of Commerce, people have no idea of what a splendid seaside resort lies at such a convenient distance. Week'end holidays, always desirable for the mental aid physical welfare of a business community, should be made as easy to obtain as possible, and we have strong hopes' that the Government will readily assist in furthering the end desire:!.
