STRIKE OF MILL OPERATIVES. CONSIDERABLE RIOTING. EUROPEANS ASSAULTED. Received July 20, 8.18 a.m. CALCUTTA, July 19. Fourteen thousand mill operatives have struck at Bombay. There has been considerable rioting and window-smashing and some assaults on Europeans. The attitude of the strikers necessitated tlie calling out of the military. Twelve thousand strikers then resumed work. Batteries of artillery still remain in the disturbed area.
RIOT ACT READ
POLICE FIRE ON THE CROWD. Received July 20, 10 p.m. CALCUTTA, July 19. The mill hands struck in order to hasten the granting of the autonomy. They pelted Europeans with stones and brickbats and smashed windows. The Riot Act was read. The police fired 7 on the dispersing crowd. No lives were lost.
