THE MYSTERY OF A STOLEN PICTURE.
RANSOM DEMANDED FOR ITS RETURN. BY TEI.KOIiAVJl —PM2SB ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July 17. Three months auo there mysteriously disappeared from the Academy of Fine Arts a picture entitled "Surrey Hills." by W. B. Leader. The picture, which was valued at about £6OO, is the property of the City, and the Mayor was approached by correspondence in a dipguis-d handwriting to pay runsom for the restoration of the painting. Letter.? were signed "A. G. Ransom," and at first £l5O wad demanded. The Sailors Relt was indicated us th 3 place where the reply might be sent, and subsequently a certain column in the "New Zealand Times" was suggested as a medium f>ir negotiations. As the money wan not forthcoming the thief wrote threatening to cut the picture into pieces the size of postage atampd, and return in that form. Another exnedient adopted by the holder of the picture was to threaten the Mayor with personal violence unless th-.! £l6O demanded was paid. Eventually the demand was reduced to £SO, and this sum the Mavor paid out* of hi 3 own pocket, with the result that the pictur" was restored to-Juy ns silently and mysteriously as it was taken away.
