A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION . CHRISTCHURCH, July 11. A serious accident occurred on Mr Harold Gardner's Puran Estate yesterday afternoon. A young man, named John Tregunce, aged about 22. belonging to Lin wood, was at work s ime two or three miles up the gully on the slopes of Mount Herbert. He was grubbing tussocks when the ground, which was soaked by the recent heavy rain, gave way, and he fell over a cliff about fifty feet. The accident occurred about 3 o'clock. A doctor was summoned from Lyttelton, and the injured man was placed on a stretcher found in a hut on the hillside, and with some difficulty was carried down the hill, and taken down to the wharf on a sledge. He was taken to Lyttelton in a launch, and then to the casualty ward, where he waa found suffering from concussion of the brain, and a bad scalp wound. He was then unconscious, but recov • ered consciousness later.
