ALL RED MAIL SERVICE.

CANADA MAKES A MOVE

CO-OPERATION SOLICITED

Received July 10, 10.5 p.m. OTTAWA, July 10. In the Dominion House of Commons, yesterday. Sir Wilfrid Laurier moved—"That it is desirable to as soon as possible take steps to carry into effect the Imperial Conference's decision with respect to an AllRed mail service, and expressing Canada's willingness to assume a fair share of the burden, and the hope that Australia and New Zealand will cooperate with Canada in arranging a definite plan." Sit Wilfrid said it might not bu advisable to subsidise steamers as large as the Mauritania, out a fleet having a speed of from twenty to twenty-one knots was necessary for the Atlantic, and eighteen to twentyknot boats on the Pacific. Mr Foster, a former Minister of Finance, complained that no commercial reason had been given to warrant the expenditure of a million dollars a year for a decade, boides New Zealand required a thirteen-day and not a sixteen-day Pacific service. Mr Barden moved an amendment expressing strong sympathy with the object of the resolution, but declaring that the essential features were cold storage and -.heap rates; also requiring any contract to be submitted to Parliament. I Mr Lifton declared that the project could not be carried into effect under five years, and required a subsidy. The British Government were awaiting the action of the colonies. Mr Lifton said that he believed a twentyfour knot Atlantic service and a twenty-knot Pacific service would satisfy Australia and New Zealand.
