MAJOR CUP. Y.M.C.A. v. KNOX. A match was played at Lansdowne yesterday afternoon, between the Knox and Y.M.C.A. teams. The ground was in good order, and a fast ard interesting game was witnessed. Shortly after the "bully-off" Y.M.C.A. set up a determined attack and came within an ace of scoring. Good defensive play on the part of the Knox backs sent the Blacks back to the centre again. Play centred for a time, and then Y.M.C.A. attacked again, but Knox eventually removed play to Y M.C.A. territory, and the latter were called upon to defend. Play became very fast, and the ball travelled from one end of the field to the other, neither side being able to claim any advantage. A Y.M.C.A. forward rush was responsible for the carrying of play into Knox territory, where Williams finished up a brilliant run by scoring a goal. For the rest of the spell play was in favour of Y.M.C.A. Knox opened the second spell with a vigorous attack on the Y.M.C.A. ' goal, and bad shooting lost them a score. Knox returned to the attack, but the Blacks removed play to the centre. Y.M.C.A. now had a turn at attacking, and the Knox goal-keeper had a busy time defending. He eventually cleared the line, and Knox forwards swept down to the Y.M.C.A. circle, where a probable score was lost through faulty hitting. Knox were now having the best of play, and kept Y.M.C.A. on the defensive for some time. "Twenty-fives" on two occasions gave Y.M.C.A. relief. Good forward play by the Blacks eventually put Knox on the defensive, but the Whites cleared their line. Knox attacked again, but faulty hitting was again in evidence, and Y.M.C.A. swept down to their opponents' goal, and Knox had a busy time, but no score resulted. Time was called shortly after, leaving Y.M.C.A. victors by one goal to nil. Mr O'Meara, of Carterton, made an efficient referee.
W.F.C.A. A v. CARTERTON B.
This match was played on the Showgrounds at Masterton yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the local men by six goals to two. In the first spell W.F.C.A. kept their opponents busy on the defensive, and by superior combination scored three goals in fairly rapid succession. Schubert, with a dashing run, shot one goal, and Pragnell two. Carterton did not score at all in the first half.
The second spell opened with Carterton somewhat more energetic, in fact right through the spell they endeavoured to stem what proved to be a hopeless tide. They lacked concerted effort, but good individual play relieved matters for them a little, Major and F. Fairbrother scoring a goal each. Their opponents, however, added another three gaols to their' total, Schubert and Pragnell being again responsible for this success, the former placing one, and the latter two goals on this occasion. The game is simply described—it was combination versus non-combination Mr F. B. Rosson acted as referee.
