AUSTRALIA AND DEFENCE.
VIOLENT ATTACK ON MR DEAKIN.
Received July 9, 10.3 a.m. SYDNEY, July 9. At the annual meeting of the Pi:storalists' Union, Mr W. E. Abbott, in his addresp, slated that more than two million pounds' worth of siozk had boon lost in the Riverina and in Victoria during the last three months, owing to the drought. After condemning the Commonwealth Immigration Act, and referring to the question of Imperial defence, Mr Abbott said, "With all tiie efFrontcry of a sturdy beggar, who at the same time was half beggar, half bully, and all cowani, our Prime Minister, who was ehcted to represent Australia, by virtue of our munificent contribution of a shilling per head per annum, claims the right to say where the ships of the British Navy shall be placed in case of war, and threatens withdrawal of our contribution if his demands are not complied with. The position is untenable, and when the British taxpayer realises how he is being used and flouted, the result will be disastrous to us or those coming after us."
