EVICTED NORFOLK ISLANDERS.

CABLE NEWS.

United Press Association—By Eloctrio Telegraph Copyright,

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Received July 1, 10 a.m. SYDNEY. July 1

Mr Quintal, from Norfolk Island, laid before the Governor papers in support of the plea of a number of evicted Islanders, that their houses were given them by Queen Victoria in 1856.

The most important document fis one from Governor Denison to Sir George Grey, sent when the island was being settled. It withdraws the suggestion to send an officer to regulate the allotment of land to families, as the Islanders themselves had placed a magistrate in authority who could do it. He says: "I have directed Mr Gregorie, with the exception of a few reserves for public purposes, to divide the whole island between the newcomers, and the object in so doing is to check any attempt which might be made on the part of the inhabitants of the Australian colonies t9 establish themselves on the island. It is essential that the land should be transferred to newcomers in such manner as to give them the right to deal with it as their own. Legislative interference from colonial governments should be kept out." Instructions were given to Lieut. Gregorie to set aside a little public land and glebe land, and that the remainder should be handed over to different heads of families. SETTLERS FOR NEW SOUTH WALESReceived July 1, 9.20 a.m. LONDON, June 30. Since January Ist the New South Wales agency in London gianted assisted passages to 1,356 settlers. There was no difficulty in securing farming settlers.
