Tne Govern mens has invited the opinion of the principal Friendly Societies on the subject of non-con-tributory pensions. A majority replied favouring the Bill. Others, including the Northumberland and Durham Miners Societies, favoured a relief fund. The Rechabites and Druids consider pensions would have an injurious effect, by discouraging thrift. Robert Sievier was arrested during the progress of the racing at Sandown Park, and taken to Bow-street Police Court, on an information laid by J. B. Joel. THREATS TO PUBLISH DEFAMATORY MATTER.

The warrant charges Sievier with making threats to publish defamatory matter concerning Joel, for the purpose of extorting £5,000.

Sievier is an ex-Australian bookmaker, horseowner and newspaper proprietor. The feud between him and Joel is a long-standing one.
