OBITUARY.

MR R. MAUNSELL,

The death occurred at his residence, "Bridge," Lansdowne, yesterday, of Mr Robert Maunsell.an old and highly respected resident of the district. The deceased gentleman had been afflicted with an attack of neuralgia for some few days past, but on Surday he was apparently recovered, and was not confined to his bed. Yesterday morning, however, he was nut auie to leave his bed, and at about ten o'clock an attack of heart failure ended fatally. Th<2 sad event was of j a most unexpected nature, and caused

I a shock to his relatives and friends. The death of Mr Maunsell is the more regrettable from the fact that nnly last month his brother, with whom the late Mr Maunsell was in partnership, left on a trip to the Old Country. , The late Mr Maunsell was a son of the late Venerable Archdeacon Maunsell, who was one of the eatly missionaries who came to the Dominion in 1834, along with the Rev. Burroughs, Archdeacon Williams, Bishop Selwyn, and other noted church workers who followed the Rev. Marsden. The Venerable Archdeacon Maunsell settled at Russell, and tha late Mr Maunsell was born at Port Waikato 67 years ago. It is 48 years since the late Mr Maunsell took up land in the Wairarapa, when he settled at Te Nui station, acquired from the | Government, and in which he was cr-owner with hi 3 brother. The late Mr Maunstll, who was a bachelor, was of a retiring disposition, and took but a limited part in active public life. He held a commission of the peace for some time, but resigned it "many years ago. He was a member of the old Wairarapa North County Council, acting on that body as representative for Castlepoint riding, and was Chairman of the Council for a time. He had also held the position of Chairman of the Castlepoint Road Board, and was connected with various Agricultural and Pastoral Associations, including the Masterton Association. The funeral will leave "Bridge," Laisdowue, at 2.30 o'clock on Thursj day afternoon.
