STEALING BEER.

WELLINGTON, June 24. This morning three firemen, named Robert Johnson, Charles Johns, and Arthur Addison, belonging *0 the Waikare, came before Mr Riddell, S.M., for sentence. They had been found stealing a quantity of beer valued at 5s belonging to the Union Company. Chief Detective McGrath stated that the fingerprint department could not find any record against the men.

His Worship observed that the offence really amounted to broaching cargo. These offences were becoming more frequent, and owing to the difficulty in detecting them were looked upon as being of a serious nature. If cargo broaching increased it would be necessary for the Legislature to take some steps towards instituting the right of search both on wharves and on vessels. Each defendant would be fined £5, in default 21 datys' imprisonment.
