BOOKMAKERS FINED.

HASTINGS, June 19. Two unlicensed bookmakers, named J. Lonergan and William Scanlan, were, to-day, each fined £5 and costs £1 7s, for refusing to ieave the Hastings Racecourse when requested to do so. Mr McCarthy, S.M., said that he had imprisoned others for a similar offence without the option of a fine, and would do so again. Lonergan contended that he was not plying his calling, and would appeal. The Magistrate said that he would have to provide security to the amount of £ls in th« event of his doing so. Counsel for the Club pointed out that the licenses cost £2O, and the fine (£5) left a profit for the bookmaker.
