SOUTHLAND SHOW.
BY TEU'ianAl'M— I'BESS ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, June 16. The Southland Winter Show was opened this afternoon by the Hon. R. McNab, Minister for Agriculture. Last year's Show was considered to have reached the high-water mark in quality, yet this year's exhibits, though in some classes not quite so numerous, were equal in merit to the high standard then set, despite the fact that the season had not been so good as tho last, One of the most notable events of the Show was the heavy scoring in cheese of Mr John Sawyer, of Edendale. He won twelve out of fourteen awards in four classes for factory, and was awarded for the third successive year the handsome sixty-guinea cup, which now becomes his own property. Mr Sawyer has offered a valuable trophy, not necessarily a cup, for future annual competition under conditions similar to those pertaining to the trophy he has just won. There was no factory butter entered, but ths farmers' butter exhibits were good. The display of root crops was exceptionally fine, even for this district. The judge of the apples stated that the limestone country round about Winton and Lime Hills was ideal country for the culture of these fruits, and that the local apples shown, though fewer in number ami variety, were equal in quality to those in the Government exhibit. Tho Agricultural Department's exhibit here, as elsewhere, was the centre of considerable) interest, and its value as an object lesson was freely admitted.
