MR MASSEY AND SINGLETAXERS.

. ■» ■ On being a&lced at Auckland for a clearer explanation of his recent references to the Hon. G. Fowlds and singe-tax and Socialism, Mr Massey (Leader of the Opposition) said: "My reference was realty to two statements made by and taken in conjunction. The first was made at a social evening held by the Auckland Sinple-tax League on March Cth, and the other was in Mr Fowlds's speech to his constituents at Grey Lynn. Afc the single-tax social fie Minister s-aid: 'The social movement was now nseessary and inevitable, and it was daily becoming more apparent that the movement must be either in the direction of increased individual freedom, through abolition of monopoly, or increased restriction of freedom by Government interference. The only alternatives for the social movement were now either towards sngle-tax, or towards Socialism. Speaking at Grey Lynn, Mr Fowlds said: 'lf the change was not effected in one particular way, it would be brought about in another way. That way might be Socialism. The present system was not likely to continue very long, because the schoolmaster had been abroad. The man who keeps his co;it on has a large proportion of the product of labour, while the man who has his coat olf gets very little of what his labour produces.'"
