OPAKI AND LANSDOWNE WATER SUPPLY.
RATEPAYERS ADOPT PROPOSED SCHEMES.
On Saturday about two-thirds of the total number of ratepayers recorded their votes at the poll held at the County Offices in connection with the proposals to borrow £4,500 for a high pressure water supply scheme for Lansdowne, and £2,500 for a water supply for Opaki. In the early part of the day only a limited amount of interest was shown in the poll. Up till noon only thirty ratepayers out of 158 entitled had voted on the Lansdowne scheme, and three out of twenty-eight entitled on the Opaki scheme. When the poll clooed, however, 17 voters had exercised their privileges regarding the Opaki scheme and 92 on the Lansdowne schemei A few strong supporters of the schdmea maintained a busy campaign for votes during the day, being spurred on," no doubt, by an "opposition" circular issued on Saturday morning. The result of the poll was a substantial majority in favour of both schemes. The detailed figures are as follow : LANSDOWNE HIGH PRESSURE SCHEME. Vote 3. For the proposal 94 Againtt 15 Total 109 OPAKI IRRIGATION SCHEME. Votes. For the proposal 26 Against 4 Total 30
A three-iifths majority was required in each case, and of the number of votes recorded on the Lansdowne scheme 68 vo es would have sufficed to carry the proposal, and for the Opaki scheme 18 would have been sufficient. The 158 ratepayers on the Lansdowne roll were capable of exercising 179 votes, and 92 voted. The 28 ratepayers on the Opaki roll possessed 46 votes, and the 30 votes recorded represented 17 ratepayers.
