The results of the three University students, who have been successful in securing the new scholarships institute:] by the Government for the encouragement of scientific research, is one that will be looked forward to with the deepest interest. One annual scholarship is open t ) each of the Universities in the Dominion, and in this connection it is rat!:er t ■ be regretted that no candidate from the Auckland University coma forward to avail himself; of the advantages of the scholarcih'p. The subjects that are t') receive the attention of the successful student-? are the study of the fat industry, and the investigation of the New Zealand ironsands and Otago brown coals. All three subjects provide a wonderful field for scientific exploration, and it is quite within the realms of possibility that industrial developments of great importance to New Zealand will accrue from some of the investigations. Numerous other subject; unique to New Zealand coul'.l very well b?. investigated at the hands of scientists, but these will no doult receive attention in due course. It is, also, satisfactory to note that the scholarships can be exLiidcJ for a further two years if the Board controlling them deem it desirable.
