At the Supreme Court, to-day, before Justice Cooper, the case in which Richard Essex, the late Mayor, claimel £5Ol from E. D. Hoben, proprietor of the "Manawatu Times," for alleged libel in connection with the recent Mayoral election, came up for heaving. The statement of claim cet out that the plaintiff had suffered damage from an article in the "Manawatu Times," in which the words, "labourers whisky won" figured. It was held that the words meant that the plaintiff had won votes from the labourers by providing them with whisky. Other libellous matter was also said to have been published. For the defence it was denied that the words quoted referred to plaintiff. For the plaintiff, evidence was I'ivtii by several councillors, the town clerk, the chairman of Essex's election committor, and ethers. The ea«e for the plaintiff was not completed when the Court adjourned.
