PROGRESSIVE SHEPHERDS.
Not the least important advance in the pastoral world is the forward movement now being made among sh.-pherds in respect of improving the capabilities of their dogs. The Collie trials which closed on Saturday constituted an important event among shepherds and sheep. r armerF, and the performances of some of the dogs were almost startlingly intelligent, and especially the achievements of the imported collies. It is at gatherings of this kind that those who hold the responsible position of handling sheep daily are given an incentive to move along with the times, and by educating their dogs up to a high standard advance the irterest of their employers or themselves, as the case may be. While it is pleasant to note that several leading runholders in the district encourage and assist the holding of collie trials bv every means in their power, many of the large s.heepfarmers are lamentably indifferent. The value of a good shepherd, with an intelligent pack of dogs i 3 best known to those who have the dealing with large flocks of sheep, and it is to bo hoped that the utility of collie trials, will be more generally recognised in the future than is the case just a t present.
