WELLINGTON SUPREME COURT. WELLINGTON, May 26. Robert Brown was sentenced at the Supreme Court, to-day, to four months imprisonment for stealing a watch and chain. Thomao George, alias McGuire, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for stealing a travelling trunk from the New Zealander.Hotel. Herbert Edward Hamilton Bird, was charged with stealing goods and money, to the value of £7l 15s, from Thomas Major Shore. The evidence was not concluded when the Court rose for the day. WELLINGTON AND MANAWATU RAILWAY. WELLNGTON, May 2G. Nothing has been done in the matter of the acquisition of the Wellington and Manawatu Company's railway line by the Government, except that formal notice has b3en given t;> the Company that on December 7th the State will exercise its power to take over the line. It is rumoured that the Company will adopt a strictly negative attitude. There is a possibility that legislat'on will be brought forward during the corning session, by which the transfer will take place on December 7th, leaving the question of compensation to be settled afterwards. KILLED IN A MINE. ' GREYMOUTH, May 26. Robert Lumsden, fifty years of age, was killed in the State coal mine by a fall of coal this morning. He leaves a wife and four children. BAD CANNED FRUIT. CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. Application was made to-day to Mr Bishop, S.M., to grant an order fori the destruction of 792 tins of French canned fruit, imported by F. A. Cook, Italian warehouseman, through agents in Wellington. On arrival in Christchurch the fruit was found to be fermented. An order was made to send the fruit to the destructor, the costs of destruction —6d per case — and costs of the prosecution to be borne by defendant. The fruit is valued at 13s 6d per dozen. Mr Bishop said it was rough on defendant, but could not be helped.
ALLEGED MUKDER
WESTPORT, May 26. Olaf Halimen and Andersen, seamen off the s.s. Canopus, appeared before Mr E. Rawson, S.M., to-day, charged with having murdered Ernest John Bourke on May Bth. The evidence was heard of Connelley, who stated, as-he did at the inquest, that he accompanied the two men with. Bourke to McLaughlin's cart shed, and that there Bourke was :trucl: by Andersen, and struck, kicked and searched by Ilalimen. Lengthily crass-examined, he stated he had never seen or had drinks with a man who appeared in Court named Haakon Haakon«en, who. was cook on the barque Takora, recently in port. Evidence was also given by William Murray, Hugh Duncan, Constable Xeennn and Constable Buttar, mainly similar to that given at the inquest. The Court then adjourned till 10 a.m. tomorrow.
FOUND DEAD. NAPIER, May 2G. A married woman named Elizabeth Clark, aged 61 years, wife of Arthur Clark, a cook, was found dead in the backyard of her residence in Chaucer Road this afternoon. In the morning she seemed to be in hiV usual health. She was a sufferer from asthma. . A LAND BALLOT. NELSON, May 23. The ballot fcr sections in the Braeburn Settlement recently acquired by the Government took place at Murchisnn to-day. The successful applicants were as follows: —J. Daiton, Westport, section 4, block XVI.; F. K. Bird, Whangamoa, section 5, block XVI.; J. Whillem, Wellington, section 6, Block XVI.; D. W. Oxnam, Murchison, section 7, block IV.; W. Cody, Takaka, section 8, block IV.; J. S. Bailey, Wellington, section 9, block IV; ,T. Harvey, Otago, section 11, block IV.; VV. J. Martor Canterbury, section 12, block 1V.,; F. Page, Murchison, section 1, block VII.; H. W. Clinton, Canterbury, section 1, block VIII.; P. and T. O'Connor, Appleby, section 2, block VIII.; L. McGowan, Spring Grove, section 1, block VHI.. About eleven thousand acres were disposed of.
