BOROUGH WORKS.
REPORT OF THE ACTING BOROUGH ENGINEER. The following report by the Borough Engineer (Mr W. T. Mansfield) were adopted by the Masterton Uorough Council, last evening:—l have considered the question of the purchase of weathered boulders delivered at the Enough's depot, and I consider that if the Borough Council intimate to the public that they are prepared to purchase any reasonable quantities of weathered boulders delivered at the depot from any source at 2s per cubic yard, and it will be of advantage to the Borough and perhaps to the means of giving employment to these in need of it. I have been requested by your select committee on Yates' Estate to advise as to the drai; age of Pownall streei. If Pownall s;reet as it existed be surface drained then in that case it will b2 necejsaiy to excavate at the intersections with Renall and Cornwall streets, respectively but I see no obstacle to that course being pursued : f the Borough Council take over Yates' Estate at their existing levels. If, however, the Borough Council decide lo take over Yates' roads at the now finished level the beat course for the Council to put-sue would be to raise the level of PovvnaU street by means of filling and so artificially surface drain into the st.*eet3 before mentioned. I do not consider that; it would be a wise thing to do to attempt to tinker with the entrance to Wright street in order to reduce the difference between the levels of Pownall street and that street. If anything in that direction be done at all it should take the form of an absolute removal of the existing work and the construction of new works tc fit in with what is required. This matter was referred back to the select committee to report on.' Since my last report the work of roughly forming a gravel footpath in Bunny's road and Hogg Crescent has been completed. The Borough Council authorised the expenditure of £3O to carry out this work. The whole of Bunny's road on both sides has been patched and the whole of Hogg Crescent from its intersection with Worksop road to its intersection with Dixon street 01 one side only and a portion of the other side from Dixon street to the intersection of Bunny's road. The work thus performed covers a length of 63 "hains for a width of five fee t. and has been executed for a sum of £lB 16s 4d, equal to approximately Gs per chain. This is a striking illustration of what can be done to meet the demand of the ratepayers for some sort of footpath,, to enable them to walk along the unpaved streets with reasonable facility,- and seeing that the work will be so much appreciated entails so little expenditure I again urge what I have before requested, vis. : —that where the funds of the Borough Council do not permit of providing kerbed channel and tar paved footpath 3 or even of a graded gravel i path until such be possible this cheap , but at the same time highly necessary work be carried out.
