The barque Pa las, from Mollendo, Peru, had a remarkable experience when in the vicinity of the San:oan group. Dunne a lull and in a calm sea, the vessel shook, quivered, and was then lifted bodily out of the water. She came down with a severe bump. Several big tidal waves followed in quick succession. Some hours later there was a similar visitation, the shock lasting ten seconds. The vessel shook like a leaf. It is supposed to have been a submarine earthquake.
