MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Masterton Borough Council met last evening, there being present: the Mayor (Mr P. L. Rollings), and Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Hunter, A. Haughey. W. Morris, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ev/ington and J. Yarr. Leave of absence was granted to Crs J. Elliott and J. Prentice. A letter was read from Mr W. G. Beard, solicitor, on behalf of Mr E. Feist, asking whether they intended to do anything in the way of compensating Mr Feist in respect of the I lowering of the Queen street footpath through the re-grading work being carried out there, which, the letter said, had seriously affected the shop frontage. The letter was referred to the committee previously set up to deal with a former letter cf the same nature'. The engineer was also instructed to jir.'pare a full report dealing with the question. A letter was read from Mr T. G. Mason drawing attention to the necessity for widening Makora road, and asiiing '.he Council to proceed with the work in the interest? of the safety of the residents in the streets. The Engineer stated that he had received instructions from the Council to take the land necessary for widening the street where not given under the Public Works Act. Some difficulty had been experienced in getting the details of the lands, hut the notices to take the land were being prepared. After some further discussion it was decided to inform Mr Mason tlu.t wli'ire the land was given the wo-k was now in hand, and as soon as the necessary steps were taken the other portion would also bo proceeded with. Correspondence that had passed between the Acting Town Clerk and the Secretary of the Fire Board was read, in which it wa3 disclosed that the Fire.Board intended to take advantage cf the provisions of the Fire Brigades Act, and pay the amount of £562 8s 6d, valuation agreed upon fur the fire-plant of the Borough, by instalments, and provision had been made in this year's estimates for the first instalment. It wa3 resolved to have the assessment agreed upon, and the mcdj of payment put under the seal of the Council. A letter was also read from the Board, asking the Council to hand over the sum of £2OO agreed to be taken up by the Council for fire alarm installation, the sum to be included by the Board in the assets to be taken over by the Board, and to be repaid in the same manner as the money to be paid for those assets. The Mayor said he thought it was advisable for the Board to raise the money itself, that was providing the Council was not Lound to take up the £2of. Cr Pragnell agreed wit!) this view. Thrt Mayor pointed out that unless the Council' was bound to take up the money it would be illegal for it to do as asked by the Fire Board. A motion was carried that providing only that the Council is legallj bound to take up the money it b< , handed over to the Fire Board on th< terms asked. Accounts amounting to £563 7s lOi > were passed for payment.
