TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). Mr J. Phillips, who for some time acted as private trainer for Mr F. Armstrong, of Akitio, came to Masterton this bringing with him 1 Golden Butterfly and Afterthought. He is securing stables here, and will start as a public trainer. Before leaving Akitio he was presented by friends and well-wishers, with a handsome chain and locket. Wairarapa will be represented in the Wanganui Steeplechase on Saturday next by Mr J. Orr's Tilson. The Lethe gelding is a very fine jumper, and if his condition is sufficiently solid he should see the distance out. Aberration is now being schooled over hurdles, and gives promise of making a satisfactory jumper. In any case the schooling he will receive will be beneficial, as it will naturally act in the direction of making him a resolute finisher. Mocassin, who has been a member of M. McGrath's team for a considerable time without being seen out in public, may compete in big steeplechase events during the winter. Mr A. Reside is having a rising two-year-old filly by San Fran—Lisca handled. She is well grown, and shows plenty of quality. Mr J. Russell, the Martinborough trainer, brought over from Blenheim with him Gold Bird and Rangua, two winners at the recent Marlborough meeting. Tney will be stable companions to Narcotic and Merrie Zealand, and with the quartette Russell should have a successful time. Wairarapa horses nominated for the Otaki meeting are Riflemaid, Aboriginal, Merrie Zealand, Sandix, Simplex, Sherlock Holmes, Diplomatic, Skye, Blue Ribbon, Lochiela, Strathcona and Letherin. Quality and quantity are well represented in the nomination list, so our representatives will need to be at their best in order to win. The South Wa'.rarapa Charitable Trotting Club's meeting on June 3rd is sure to- be a very successful one. Exceptionally good nominations have been received, and as some fine performers are included in the list, there should be several spirited exhibitions of trotting. Most of the horses in Mr R. Knox's stable at Opaki are being spelled for a portion of the winter. The stable will not be represented at the Otaki meeting next month.
