LONDON MARKETS.
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT,
The High Commissioner cables as follows from London under date May 16:—The mutton market is.very dull, except for prime light weight. Canterbury brands, which are getting very scarce, met with brisk demand. Ca iterbury mutton is quoted at 4a an 1 North Island at 3§d. There is goid demand for prime quality lam'o, bu'; there are complaints with regard to the quality of New Zealand brands this season, There is dull sale for all hmb of inferior quality. ' Canterbury brahcis ave quoLd aL 5R other than Canterbury s|d. The beef market is weak. New Zealand beef is being pushed for sale. Hindquarters are quoted at 3§d and fore-quarters at 3d. v ■■ --^ Tha butter market is quiet, w>th a tendency in favour of buy3rs. European supplies are increasing. The choicest New Zealand is bringing 1103, Danisb Ills, Australian 104s, and Siberian 104s per cwt. The cheese market is quiet, and small business is doing. Prices are irregular. White makes are quoted at 59s and coloured 58s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet, with nothing doing, and| prospects are uncertain. The following are the current quotations:—Good fair grade, on the spot, £25 10s; fair grade, on the spot, £24 10s; fair current Manila, £24 10s. May-to-July shipments are quoted as follow: —Good fair grade, £25 15s; fair grade, £24 10s; fair current Manila, £24 10s. There is no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week. The wool market has recovered, and values are equal to closing rates at the last sale.
