A case of scarlet fever lias occurred at Tupurupuru, Gladstone, ar.d has been reported to the authorities.
An address on Mission Work in China will be given in St. Matthew's school room at 8 o'clock on Monday evening by Miss Bushel], who had twenty-five years experience as a missionary at Foochoo. A small snake, measuring about seven inches in length, and about an inch in girth, was,, discovered in a case of pineapples received Jnirn Queensland, by Mra Barry, of Carterton, yesterday.
The Y.M.C.A. Bible Class meets to-night at 7 o'clock, to which all men are invited. On Sunday afternoon Mr John Hunter will speak on the question: "Can man be raised to a higher le/el than he is to-day?" A solo will be contributed by one of the members. The strangers' tea will be held at the close of the meeting. A special invitation ia given to men to be present. '
At yesterday's meeting of the 'Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, the members decided, in reply to a communication received relative to the closing of the business premises in the town for two or three hours on May 23rd, in order to permit of the employees witness'ng the British - Wairarapa - Bush football match, that it was a matter for the Employers' Association, and not for the Chamber to determine.
An enjoyable social and dance in aid of the Clareville stall, in connection with St. Mark's Church bazaar, was held in the Clareville Hall on Thursday evening, and was largely attended. Vocal and instrumental items were contributed, and dancing was kept up until a late hour. Messrs W. Robinson, D. Nicolson and J. Shntkowski supplied the music for the dancers. Supper was provided by the ladie?.
A "Hospital Saturday and Sunday" w.'ll be held on May 2°rd and' 24th, under the auspices of the Masterton Friendly Societies' Council. The procaeds are to he handed over to the Masterton Hospital. On Sunday, May 24th, a procession comprising the local Friendly Societies, Banis, Fird Brigade, Fire Police, Ambulance Corps, and other local bodies, will march to the Park, where speeches will be delivered.
The following letter is being circulated among members of the Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club: — You are hereby notified that the first lecture on life saving, etc., will be delivered on Monday evening, May 18th. 1908, in the Dominion Hall. The lecture will be given by Dr. Ross. There will be neither charge for admission nor collection, so bring your frierds.— Yours faithfully, Rupert Ilosking, Hon. Secretary.
The Rev. J. N. Buttle will preach at both services at the Methodist Church to-morrow. In the evening the subject will be: "The fhilippian Gaoler," tnd the iinthorn will be, "Thine, 0 Lord, is the greatness" (Kent). At Kuripuni. at 7 p.m., Mr Shute will conduct the services. At Wangaehu, at 3 r\m., the Rev. J. N. Buttle will preach, and at the Taueru, at 3.15 p.m., Mr Chilton will conduct the services.
At the Knox Presbyterian Church, on Sunday, the services will be conducted by the Rev. A. T. Thompson, 8.A., B.D. In the morning he will take the Young Men's Class prior to the ordinaly service, and will deliver an address on "Mow to meet one's misfortunes." The subject for the church service will be "The attributes of God," and in the evening, "Cleansing the Temple." Mr A. G. Crawford will conduct the services nt Miki Miki and Dreyerto i, and the Kaituna serviced will b'j taken by the Rev. Thompson. 1 The monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce was ' I eld yesterday afternoon in Mes'irs Abraham and Williams' office. The members present were Messrs' H. M ison (President), J. D. Craickshank, E. H. Waddington, W. E. Chambevlain and H. H. Donald. The secretary reported'"" that the Chamber'-" credit balance at the bank was £2 Cs 2d. Mr J. T. M. Hovnsby, M.P., wrote in reference to the opening up of Whareama river by means of a road to the landing reserve, urging the Chamber t> put the matter to the test with the Masterton County Council, so that further steps might be taken, if necessary, during the ensuing session of Parliament. Mr Cruickshank moved, and Mr Waddington seconded, that the Masterton County Council be requested to take steps to open up, if possible, a road tu Whareama. —Carried. One new member wa3 elected.

Dredging returns to hand last night were:—Masterton Dredge, 670z ldwt, for 310 hours; Mystery Plat, 40oz lOdwt, for week. The Masteron Dredge has declared a dividend of ss, which is payable on Tuesday.
In connection with the proposal to extend the telephone service at Masterton the Chamber of Commerce yesterday decided that a petition be prepared for the purpose of obtaining the signatures of subscribers to the Telephone Exchange to obtain the continuous service by contributing an extra £1 a year by each subscriber.
At a meeting of the Otago Institute, Dr Cockayne, of the biological section of the Agricultural Depart-, ment, showed a number of specimens of the Australian ladybird, which has successfully combated the blight that has seriously menaced the life of blue gum plantations in South Canterbury. "As there are in Canterbury alone," said the Doctor, "over 10,UOO acres devoted to gum plantations, the great monetary gain which has been secured to the dominion through the Introduction of this ladybird, must be estimated at well over a million pounds sterling. The Auckland "Herald" says that when Parliament re-assembles it will be the duty of members to obtain a full and detailed statement of the Waiotapu camp administration—of the crimes for which its inmates have been convicted, of the sentences imposed upon them, of the number of convictions recorded against them, and of the length of their residence in the dominion. It is quite true that many a prisoner who is serving his tenth sentence may be a better man and a more hopeful case than the prisoner who i 3 serving his first.sentence, ai.d that he may be reformed by being taught to work and by being trtated in an encouraging manner. But burglars and highway robbers, whether convicted for the first or the fifth <ime, ought to be encouraged to reform somewhere else than in a tree-plant-ing camp, for they are clearly dangerous characters and not to be entrusted with the opportunity to walk away which may not unwisely be allowed to prisoners who at worst are petty and not dangerous offenders.

A meeting of the Masterton Tradesmen's Association of Employers will be held *in the Exchange Buildings, on Tuesday evening next at 8 o'clock. Mr F. B. Rossnn, hairdresser ar.d tobacconist, announces that clients can rely on receiving first-class attention at his new saloon.

Mr Lysnar, Mayor of Gisborne, speaking at the opening of the Cosmopolitan Club, on Thursday night, said they could not admit that America'i> affairs had caused the price of wool to go so low. He ascribed the reason to want of control at' Home. Meat had maintained its price because of the control exercised, and the dominion should look into the matter and see if better organisation could not be provided in regard to wool. There has been discussion and contention for some months past as to whether the decision of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugbj Union to have only one test game between the AngloWales team and the representatives of New Zealand should be, departed from. The subject was debated at some length on Thursday night, when the delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union finally decided to upset the committee's decision, and to have three test games. The additional test games will be played at Dunedin on 6tli June and at Auckland on 25th July. • ...
