IN PURSUIT OP SMUGGLERS

SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE TROOPS IN CONFLICT.

Received May 13, 8.31 a.m. LISBON, May 12

A gang engaged in smuggling tobacco from Spanish territory into the Portalegre district of Portugal at midnight met a party of Portuguese Guards.

During the fight, the Spanish troops who were in pursuit of the smugglers, crossed the frontier, and were mistaken for a second gang of smugglers. A terrible conflict ensued until the error was discovered.

The smugglers fled to the mountains, leaving several dead, including two women. Several soldiers on either side were wounded and killed.
