PAHIATUA.

MAYORAL INSTALLATION,

At the annual installation of JMayor of Pahiatua (.Mr i). Crewe), *Cr Cox congratulated the Mayor on ♦being returned unopposed, which indicated that the ratepayers were ..satisfied with the manner in which .Mr Crewe had administered the -affairs of the borough during the ,past year. Mr Crowe had shown f great tact, and h-dd the balance fair .ly between all parties. There had been some critical periods in the history of the borough during ihe past : four years, but many difficulties had «been overcome, and there seemed to .be fair sailing for the Mayor's en- . suing term. In responding the Mayor thanked 'Cr Cox tor his kindly expressions, and for the co-operation of councillors in the discharge of his duties as . Mayor. There had at times been -some heat shown in discussions at Council table, but he ftlt that were only expressing their views in the interests of the borough, apart from personal ronsidera lions. He trusted that the same , good feeling as had been shown in the past would characterise the debates of the Council in future. He felt that he would have the hearty .■co-operation of councillors during the coming year. There were one or two matters of especial importance that he would bring before the Council. There was the extension of the water and drainage sybtem to be consider- ■ e<\, and it was for the Council to say whether a loan should be obtained for this work, or whether the work should be carried out piecemeal, by • drawing upon the rates from time to -time.
