BRITISH POLITICS.
THE DUNDEE BY-ELECTION. PRESS COMMENTS. Received May 11, 9.40 p.m. LONDON, May 11. "The Times" says that the great surprise of the by-election for the Dundee seat was the large shrinkage in the Labour vote. The "Chronicle" declares that the result is a smashing blow to tariff reform. The "Telegraph" says that the final phase of the election was practically fought on a basis of a claptrap Budget and cheap sugar, introduced at such a juncture as to be a direct bribe to the local and material interests of Dundee. The "Daily News" says: "Scotland's staunchness to Liberalism continues." The "Standard" says that the reduction in the duty on sugar was a determining factor in connection with the election. Mr Churchill claims that " thi3 thunderbolt from the north is a triumph for free trade, temperance and Liberalism." The ridiculous antics of the suffragettes, said Mr Churchill, brought him valuable assistance. Enormous masses of Liberal women, and also Socialists, committed a mistake by sneering at the pension scheme.
