1 SYDNEY, May 9. An old pioneer settler named Costello has died at Gouiburn at the age of a hundred and eleven years. , . ( MORAL CONDITION OF BROKEN HILL. CHURCHES DIFFER. SYDNEY, May 9. The statement made in the Presbytnan about the wicked condition of Broken Hill is indignantly refuted by the heads of the Anglican, Catholic, and Methodist Churches. A cablegram on Saturday stated that a delegate at the Presbyterian Assembly gave a lurid description of the irreligious condition of Broken Hill. He declared that forces were organi&ed there against Christianity as in no other city in the Commonwealth. They had an aggressive and almost triumphant Socialism that made scorn of sacred things. Children, he added, were gathered into schools on Monday, and taught to beware of church and ministers, while meetings of labour unions wtre held on Sundays. THE DUMPING OF BELGIAN GUNS. MELBOURNE, May 9. The Federal Minister of Customs (Hon. A. Chapman) will make enquiry into the statement of the Birmingham. Gunmakers' Association about the dumping of Belgian guns in Australia, with colourable brands likethose of English makers. The Minister states, that if fraud s discovered he will,;take action.
