THE LOSS OF THE BEGA.
MARINE ENQUIRY. Received May 8, 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, May 8. M'Cubbin, < chief engineer of the Eega, giving evidence at the inquiry concerning the foundering of the Illawarra Company's steamer Bega on the night of April sth, off Tathro Head, on the south coast of New South Wales, stated that he did not think the increase in the vessel's list was due to water, but to the | cargo. The Bega was a tender ship. CHIEF OFPICJjIK'6 EVIDENCE. Received May 8, 9.25 p.m. SYDNEY, May 8. 'ln his evidence the chief officer, who had charge of the work of stowing the cargo on the Bega, said that he knew that the cargo did not shift because it was a moral impossibility for it to do so. He did not consider the Bega a tender ship. He could advance no theory as to the cause of the disaster—in fact he had given up trying to solve the matter.
