DEATH OF MR BENNETT.
GORE, May 3. Mr Bennett, M.P. for Tuapeka, died at his residence, Raes Junction, this morning. The deceased was a leading figure in the Beaumont district, and was closely identified with the public life of the place. He had been a member of the Tuapeka County Council since its inception in the seventies. He fiisi entered the House in 1899, when he defeated Messrs Rawlings and Fraser. In 1903 he defeated Mr R. Gilkison by 64 votes, and was successful again over the same opponent at the last election by close on 1,000 vots". He arrived in the district from Victoria in 1863, and after a year or two of goldfields experience took up an agricultural and pastoral property at Reas Junction, which he lias held since. He was a native of Forfarshire, an'l emigrated to Victoria in 1854. He was 78 years of age, and leaves a family of three sons and one daughter.
