Webster (Labour member) asked whether, in view of the inadequate, biased, and unreliable reports and comments in the press on the doings of Parliament the Government would consider the advisableness of establishing a Commonwealth newspaper. The Premier (Hon. A. Deakin) replied that he was unaware of any unusual change in the attitude of the press. He thought the Government was engaged in sufficient intri cate subjects ac present, without tackling a newspaper. A BALLARAT CRIME. A SUSPECT ACQUITTED. Received May 1, 9.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 1. The man lies has been acquitted of the charge of murdering Mrs Graham at Ballarat on December 3Uth last. The body of Mrs Graham was found in a disused mine shaft. lies, with whom she had been keeping company, was arrested last month on suspicion of having committed the crime. A.M.P. SOCIETY. Received May 1, 12.57 a.m. SYDNEY, May 1. At the annual meeting of the A.M.P. Society, the chairman's address disclosed a highly satisfactory year's work, which was a record one. The industrial branch was now firmly established. The receipts over the expenditure amounted to <£1,032,000.
