RELIEVING DISTRESS.
WHAT IT COSTS. Figures placed before the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board on Tuesday give some indication of what is spent annually in the relief of distress by the ratepayers. Up to March 31st, 1908, the Board's principal expenditure (omitting shillings and pence) was:— Wellington Benevole-t Institution £4,000, Wairarapa North Benevolent Institution £6OO, St. Joseph's Orphanage £135, St. Mary's Industrial School £303, Burnham Industrial School £26, Auckland Industrial School £3l, Weraroa Boys' Farm £IOB, Wellintgon Receiving Home £2,881, Wellington Receiving Home (V.R.H.) £l9, Christchurch Receiving Home £3B, Horowhenua County Council £135, Hutt County Council £307, Wairarapa South County Council £sl,Pah'atua County Council £B4, Castlepoint County Council £144, Akifcio County Council £56, Mauriceville County Council £125, Featherston County Council £ls, Lower Hutt Borough Council £77, Petone Borough Council £320, Onslow Borough Council £B7, Karon Borough Council £lls, Miramar Borough Council £lO, Levin Borough Council £l3B, Carterton Borough Council £134, Greytown Borough Council £36, Pahiatua Borough Council £33, Eketahuna Borough Council £l4, Featherston Town Board £B. The credit balance at the end of March last was £2,785 16s 7d. Borough Council £2tf, Greytown Borough Council £23, Pahiatua Borough Council £3l, Eketahuna Borough Council £2l, Johnsonville Town Board £2O, Featherston Town Board £9, Martinborough Town Board £l2.—Total £5,420; Government subsidies on above £5,420; Government subsidies on arrears £3Q \ Recoveries Government schools. 4>717. The expenditure totalled £10,299. Ten years ago it was £9,680. It V/a3 jcatel that the local bodies, in proportion to the increase in population, contributed less now than in 1898.
