WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly mueting of the Wairarapa South .County Council waa held at. the County Offices, Carterton, on Saturday. There were present Crs Wm. Perry, (chair), T. W. Moore, E. Barrer, D. Douglas, J. Strang, H. S. Mason, P. Court, Ceo. Stevens, and R. G. Welch. The Treasurer reported as follows: Debit balance at Bank of New Zealand, £1,093 Is 9d; receipts since last meeting, £2ll lis sd. •Mr J. T. Constable, licensee of the Gladstone Hotel, wrote asking for reduction in his rent to £SO per annum, instead of £IOO, which he waa at present paying. He stated that the business of the Hotel had lately been on the decrease, and the income had been considerably reduced. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Barrer, it was decided to allow the applicant a rebate of £35 per annum. A letter was received from Mr W. N. Kummer, of Te Wharau, asking for repairs to be effected on Driscoll Road before the winter set in. Cr. Barrer moved and Cr. Dougles seconded that the water tales and culverts be attended to. The motion waa carried. Mr Weremu Whatakorori, To Wha-au, wrote making application for a grant, to improve the public road near his property. The road was at present in a very dangerous state, and if the Council agreed to make a grant, he would pay the -sum of £ls towards the work, and exchange ground free of charge. It was subsequently decided that the Engineer should prepare an estimate of the proposed work, and that the matter be re-considered next summer.

An intimation from the Bank of New Zealand asking the Counicl to pass a resolution with respect to the overdraft, was carried on the motion of the Chairman.

An application was received from Mr N. Douglas, asking the Council's permission to erect an eight wire fence on his prpoerty at Springbank, Gladstone. Cr Strang moved and Cr Mason seconded that permission be granted. The motion was carried. The Department of Roads wrote stating that investigations were being made with respect to a complaint and protest against taking over the Wangaehu Valley Road, and Matupuku Road. •

A letter was received from the Lands, and Survey Department, declining to comply with the Council's request v/ith respect to the Carringtun Estate, as the Estate was purchased at considerable cost by the Crown, It was resolved that copies of the correspondence be forwarded to the Minister of Lands.

The Sanitary Inspector, Mr Chas. Miller, wrote stating that the usual house to house inspection had been made, and all matters relating to the proper sanitation of the County had been attended to. He stated that scarlet fever at Belvedere (9 case.-)) had undoubtedly been spread by unnotified cases. The school had been disinfected. He submitted 1 a summary of infectious diseases which had occurred up till March 31st, as follows:—Scarlet fever, Belvedere, 9 cases, enteric Mount Holdsworth, 2 cases; enteric, Kokotau, 1 case. The cause of the enteric outbreak had not been ascertained. The Secretary of the Wairarapa District Hospital Board wrote asking the Council to strike a separate rate for the Hospitul funds, but no action was taken in the matter.

The Engineer's report was read. Cr Mason moved and Cr Barrer seconded that the attention of Mr W. C. Buchanan be drawn to the damage that catttle were doing on Tupurupuru Road. The motion was carried. On the motion of Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Welch it was decided that a separate rate be struck to provide «£6OO for hospitals and Charitable Aid. Cr Moore moved and Cr Stevens seconded that fj culverts with cement pipes be put in on Mt Iloldsworth Koad. The motion was carried.

Repairs wove authorised to bo effected on Dtwetidd, Belvedere, and (Jabden Roads.

Accounts amounting to £526 9s Id were passed for payment.
