TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.") Mr H. McManaway, owner of Mahuta, who won the Autumn Handicap at the Auckland meeting, is reported to have had a good win over the race. Mahuta showed a fine turn of speed, even in the heavy going, and, if he is wintered well, the black son of Mahaki will have to be reckoned with in big handicaps next season. Sunbunnet, Osiris and Moloch, members of M. McGrath's team, were taken to Trentham on Saturday to take part in the Wellington meeting, which opens on Wednesday next. J. Ayera, the Featherston trainer, has recently taken in hand the two-year-old filly, Merrivonia, by Merriwee—Livona. She is a neatly turned filly, of good quality, and coming from a successful racing family should be capable of Upholding its prestige when her time comes to carry the colours. No less than twenty-six Wairarapa owned horses have been nominated for the Marlborough meeting, to be held on 6th and 7th May. Of this number it is expected about sixteen will be taken over to compete. Strathcona has been entered for hurdle events at the Marlborough meeting. The Strathbraan gelding id a fine jumper, and gifted with a good turn of speed should show to advantage during the winter. , The much talked of Merrie Zealand

ran two very bad races at Tauherenii kau, never being near the leaders at any time. Among the candidates for the Thompson Handicap are:—Gold Crest 9.6, Marguerite 9.0,' Gold Beater 8.6. Tangimoana 8.4, Dawn 7.13, Soultine 7.4, and Sea King 6.11. Gold Crest won the Easter Handicap, one mile, at Auckland, carrying 9.0, in lmin 40secs; Gold Beater ran second in the Great Easter on Monday last, and Tangimoana scored 1 at Feilding last week. Other recent winners engaged in the race are Zimmerman, Waitapu, Ballarat, Stratagem, Sunbonnet, Chatterer, Merrie Zealand, White Lie, Toa Tuhi and Aboriginal. The latter showed a return to form at Tauherenikau, and is therefore ' exceptionally well treated on being allotted the minimum weight, 6.7.
