AN ENGINE-DRIVER'S REPORT. + Received April 24, 10.45 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 24. The question whether the brakes of the Bendigo train failed to act in the Braybrook collision is engaging attention. An expert expresses the opinion that they were on, rigidity to the train, which preventeny of its carp telescoping. The report of the engineer on the second engine of the Bendigo train has leaked out. He declared that the signals were against them. He next observed that the train was not being pulled up at tho usual spot. He then applied his brakes, but they failed. The Chief Railway Commissioner denies that there was any delay in getting relief away. The ambulance train . was despatched thirty-five minutes after the news was received. Everything was in readiness, but the services of doctors had to be secured. The Earl of Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has cabled, expressing sorrow and regret at the disaster. EXCESSIVE HOURS OF WORK. Received April, 24, 11.3 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 24. Milburn, the driver of the Bendigo train, had been on duty 11 hours 35 minutes, while the driver and fireman of the second engine commenced work at 4.45 in the morning, and were still on duty 18 hours later.
