RACING.
WAIRARAPA RACING GLUE. AUTUMN MEETING—FIRST DAY. (Special Reporter.) The weather was fine, but the temperature very cold for the first day of the Tauherenikau races yesterday. There was a good attendance of the public, and interest in the racing was very keen, quite a' number of outsiders getting home. The Easter Handicap fell to White Lie, by Merriwee —Fib, who cut out the mile and a distance in 2min 1 2-ssec. Nine bookmakers paid their business fee —four inside at £2O, and five outside at £lO, 10s extra being charged for clerks. The sum of £8.478 was passed through the machine, as compared with £6,733 last year. The Greytown Band wan in attendance during the day, and played selections on the lawn. CANTERBURY RACES. CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn meeting opened to-day at Riccarton, in dull and cold weather. The totalisator investments amounted to £15,026, as against £19,985 last year. Twenty-eight bookmakers wera licensed, the. fees amounting to £360. Passing the stand the order was—Lady Diffidence, Maranui, Duke, Electron, Jack Smith, Togo, Maltine, with Dyed Garments last. Lady Diffidence continued in fron 1 -. passing Oxenham's and along the far side, where Jack Smith ran into second place, followed by Maranui Duke, and Clarence.
