OPENING OF SYDNEY TOURNAMENT. NEW ZEALAND TEAM'S GAMES. By Telegraph —Pre.se Association. Received April 18, 7.44 p.m. SYDNEY, April 18. The Bowling Tournament started in disagreeable weather. The early part of the day was fine, but a stong wind prevailed in the afternoon, bringing drizzling showers to all greens having championships played on them, at Ashfield, Petersham, and the City green. At the latter green Chegwin and Finlay were knocked out in the first round, Bunting, Bishop and Johnston beating their opponents in the second round, while Waddell easily disposed of Johnston (Sydney) by 22 to 12. Thompson, Neave and Broad also went under. Johnston beat his oppoS nent comfortably in that round. Waddell was beaten by Kelly (Victoria) by 21 to 18. There was a good contest at Ashfield, Manning, Coltman, Smith and McGibbon being beaten in the first round. Bentley, Hain, Allnutt, and Wallace won their games. In the second rjund Hain, Wallace and Bentley were successful. At Petersham, Bas ings and Goldstein won in the first round, while Scoullar, Martin and StubberSeld were defeated. In the second round Bastings succumbed, while Goldstein won in the second and third round. The finals will be played on the City green on Monday. Received April 19, 4.13 p.m. SYDNEY, April 19. In the semi finals at Petersham, Waxman (Victoria) beat Goldstein by 21 to 12. At the City green Johnston was knocked out at the fourth round, Wallace being the only New Zealander remaining in the fifth round. RULES OF BOWLING. DISCUSSION BY CONFERENCE. Received April 19, 4.13 p.m. SYDNEY, April 19. A conference of Bowling Associations was held with a view of securing uniformity in the rules of the game. On the motion of Mr Waddell, it was decided that the maximum lengths of greens should be 120 feet, the minimum being fixed at 110 feet With regard to the size of mats, it was decided that the maximum should be 4ft 6in by 22in, and the minimum 3ft by 15in. Reference was made to the method of delivering from the mat. Mr Waddell stated that the New ZeaKtnders would fall in with any reasonable proposal on the part of the Australian States. On the question of testing bowls, it was stated there was a want of uniformity throughout Australasia. It was resolved that the standard of genuine bowls be fixed by the various Associations. In connection with mat "blocks," it was arranged that all bowls that did not pass 20ft from the mat line should be removed from the green.
