THE NORTH-WEST MANCHESTER SEAT. LONDON, April 15. Mr A. G. Hales, the no\elist and war correspondent, has abandoned the contest for the nurth-west Manchester seat, and will support Mr Joyn-son-Hicks, the Unionist candidate. _ Mr Irving stands as a candidate in the Socialist interest. In a vigorous speech at Manchester, Winston Churchill, whose elevation to Cabinet rank entails his seeking re-election, .declared that his defeat would be a serious blow to Freetrade, but would not cause the Government to resign. DISSATISFACTION IN TaRIFFITE HANKS. APPEAL FOR PIIEE TRADE. Received April 17., 9..15 a.m-LOND-OJM, April IG. The north-west Manchester election is being fought with terrific energy. Mr Joynson-Hicks has created much dissatisfaction ':in tariffite ranks by evading questions and declining to make tariff reform one of the i .sues of the election. He declares that the real issue is the condemnation of the Government. The executive of the Free Trade League, consisting of Unionists, Free Traders and Liberals, requests thp electors to vote for Free Trade, which is Mr Winston Churchill's chief plank. The last election was a duel between Mr Churchill and his present Unionist opponent Mr W. JoynsonHicks, and Mr Churchill won by 1,241 votes. Mr Joynson-Hicks is a pronounced anti-Socialist, and lately took that side in a public debate with Mr V. Grayson, the well-known member for Colne Valley.
