The High Court has decided that the Federal Conciliation and Arbitration law has no jurisdiction to settle disputes as regards wages and conditions of employment on foreign trading ships. PACIFIC MAILS. THE VANCOUVER CONTRACT. SYDNEY, April 16. Sir James Mills, managing director of the Union Company, while in Melbourne interviewed the Federal Government with reference to the extension or renewal of the Canadian mail contract. No finality has yet been reached. The Union Company is willing to provide a much improved service for an increased subsidy, with a reasonable term of contract. PRICE OF FOOD. ADVANCES IN SYDNEY. / SYNDEY. April IQ. The Colonial Sugar Cjmpany has raised prices another ten shillings per ton. The price of bran has been advanced to £7 10s per ton. The city is suffering from a milk famine, the south coast suppliers not forwarding supplies owing to the city companies ignoring the local Suppliers Association after agreeing to advance the price from 6d to Bd. DAVID SYME'S ESTATE. MELBOURNE, April 16. The late Mr David Syme's Victoidan estate has been valued for probate at £879,535. The will provides that the sum of £50,000 be put aside as a fund for public institutions. Liberal allowances are made to certain employees. Provision is nlso made for the testator's five sons carrying on the business of the newspapers "Age" and "Leader." Received April 17, 9.52 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 17. Mr Syme left bequests for literary and other members of the "Age" staff, ranging frjm £SO to £SOO. TASMANIAN CABLE SERVICE. MELBOURNE, April 16. The Federal Government has received six tenders for the Tasmanian cable. It is possible, however, that negotiations with the Extension Company will be resumed. The question of wireless telegraphy will also be considered.
