MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton County Council war, held yesterday afternoon. Present—Crs W. J. Welch (in the chair),W. Harris, J. Miller, J. Morris, H. 0. Toogoud and A. Murray. Leave of absence was granted to Cr J. Colquhoun. Messrs Coradine and Whittaker wrote offering to construct a shed for storage of firewood for £ls.—This matter was referred to a committee composed of Crs Harris, Morris and Miller. Mr F. C. Daniell waited upon the Council asking the latter to excise the White Bush Road from the heavy traffic by-law area, as applicant proposed to cart a lot of timber over the road, the bush having been sold. Mr Daniell said that in return his firm would put metal on the road on the basis of load for load, to the estimated quantity of 500 yards. It was decided to accede to the request, provided Mr Daniell deposits .£IOO as a guarantee that the road will be left in its present state of repair at the conclusion of the period. The secretary of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that the Chamber was not in a position to formulate any scheme for improving the northern approach to Masterton. A letter from Mr C. McLachlan regarding the state of the drains on Te Rangitumau Road was left to the Engineer to deal with. The clerk of Akitio County Council wrote notifying that his Council had applied for £IOO thirds to be expended on Waihoki Road by the Masterton County Council. It was decided to thank tho Akitio Council heartily for its action, and to request that the money be remitted as early as possible for expenditure. Mr H. Barling, jutir., wrote asking permission to erect two gates across Saunden Road, and remitting JBSOO amount of contribution given by him towards metalling roacj, from Waitawhiti bridge to Saunder's bridge.-—lt was decided to allow Mr Burling to i erect the gates for three months. The Mauriceville County Council remitted £ls is Id special rates due to Masterton County Council. The Wairarapa District Hospital Board wrote demanding quarterly .contribution of £135 13s 8d for hospital purposes. Mr C. F. Vallance wrote asking 'permission to erect a fence on the road at Rorokoko Hill.—Granted. The United District Charitable Aid Board made a demand for the •quarterly contribution of £7(l 13s lid. Messrs Percy Bros., Te Ore Ore, •wrote drawing attention to the bad ■state of the culverts on To Ore Ore Hoad.—Resolved that if Messrs Percy Bros, pay half the cost the Council would lower the culvert near Cavanagh's, and if they agreed to do the trenching a new one be put in on Watson's Road.

The clerk of South YVairarapa County Council wrote advising remittance of £72 Oh 8d for half cost of repairs of Waingawa bridge and caretaker's wages Taratahi water supply. Mr H. A. Bygum wrote drawing attention to the faulty condition of the bridges on the road leading to his property.—Left to the Chairman and Engineer to deal with. A notice was received from Jessie filler to the effect that she intended having her name entered on special loan for Lansdowne water scheme. Mr T. P. Lett, wrote asking the Council to put a surr, on the estimates for metalling his road. Decided, on motion of Cr Toogood, to assist Mr Lett he would also contribute. Mr A. P. Rawson submitted a written offer to survey Rorokoko roadman's cottage for £lo.—Accepted. Mr Walsh, roadman at Bideford, wrote asking the Council to improve his housing accommodation for the winter. The secretary of the Masterton Golf Club, in a letter accepted the Council's offer of £8 towards metalling the road to the golf links, and asked that the work be proceeded with at once. The District Road Engineer vfrote to state that a new survey of Moroa Road deviation would be necessary. On the motion of Cr Murray, it was decided to ask for the reinstatement of the Moroa Road loan of £4OO. A grant of £5 was voted to the I.angdale Cemetery Trustees for f jncing, etc. It was decided, on the motion of the Chairman, to ask residents on Upper Plain Road to trim over-hang-ing trees by the roadside. It was decided to'have the manuka and tauhinu on the Miki Miki Road cut at once. The action of the Engineer and various Councillors,® in attending to urgent matters during the month, was confirmed. Cr Toogood moved that Mr J. T. M. Hornbsy, M.P., be requested to procure an additional grant of £IOO towards the opening up of Homewood to Kaiwhata Road. —Carried. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee met in the morning. Present —Crs W. J. Welch (in the chair), W. Harris, J. Miller, A. Murray and J. Morris. The Treasurer reported as follows: —Bank, general fund account, credit £4,325, 13s 3d; Local Bodies Loans account, credit, £660 12s lOd; accounts, credit balance, £4,632 13s sd. Receipts since March -4.oth, £11,966 lis lOd. Accounts amounting to £2,680 16s were passed for payment. The Committee resolved to recommend the Council to advise the various applicants for remissions of overdue rates penalty that their applications could not be favourably entertained, and to inform Mr Hansen that it is not the practice of the Council to deduct rates from payments which may be due from the Council. A cordial vote of thanks was passed |to Mr H. Burling, junr., for his I liberal grant of £SOO towards the cost of metalling the Alfredton-Weber Rtiad. The Committee decided that it could not recommend the Council to comply with the request made by Mrs J. W. Beaufort for the payment of balance of price originally agreed upon with her late husband for survey of Moroa Road deviation.
