BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. FIRE IN A NEWSPAPER OFFICE. AUCKLAND, April 13. A fire occurred at the "Star" office early on Sunday morning, and originated in the stereo room. The fire brigade so promptly attacked the flames that they were confined to one lloor at the back of the premises. The damage done is estimated at between £SOO and £I,OOO, which is covered by insurances. The staff worked energetically to get the plant in working order, and repairs were effected sufficiently to enable work to be resumed as usual to-day. When the fire brigade proceeded to the fire a hose reel with two men capsized when turning the corner of Fort Street, and the men sustained injuries which are not considered serious. BOROUGH OF ELTHAM. ELTHAM, April 13. The valuation of the Borough of Eltham is £288,000, an increase of £112,000 over the valuation of three years ago. FATAL FALL. AUCKLAND, April J3. A child, named Henry Cuthbertson, aged four years, living at Ponsonby, fell from a verandah railing yesterday and died from his injuries. NAPIER MAGISTRATE'S COURT. NAPIER, April 13. At th?. Magistrate's Court, to-day, William George Brown, charged with the cheft of money, was admitted to two years probation. Alfred Harrison, who, whilst drunk, assaulted his father, was fined £lO. A number of restaurant-keepe r s were fined for breaches of the Facor;' Act.
A CHILD SERIOUSLY BURNED. AUCKLAND, April 13. A child named Charlotte Riley, aged five months, was burnt seriously about the arms and face at her home in Newton Road yesterday. The accident occurred through a kerosene lamp upsetting. ACCIDENT TO A FOOTBALLER. WELLINGTON, April 13. John O'Donohue, a single man, a stoker at the electric light works, had a leg broken while playing football to-day. THE PREMIER. LAWRENCE, April 13.
The Prime Minister, who reached Lawrence to-day, will also visit Roxburgh and Tapanui this week. He will proceed to Invercargill on Wednesday night, and on Saturday will go through by train* and steamer to Wellington, which he expects to reach on Sunday.
REDUCTION IN FREIGHT. WELLINGTON, April 13. It is announced by the four SteamShipping Companies, viz., the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Tyser Line, and the New Zealand and African Company, that trade between New Zealand and' England, that a reduction will be made in the freight to the Old Country. The alteration dates from to-day, and is to hold good until September next. The reductions are as follow : —Wool and skins, |d per lb; hemp and tow, 10s per ton weight; and tallow and pelts ss, per ton weight, HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD. NAPIER, April 13. The Hawke's Bay Education Board to-night considered a letter from S. Pearson, and resolved that any' school commititee wishing to do so be granted permission to hang copies of the ten commandments on the school walls. Representations are to be made to the Education Department that a reduction in capitation for cookery classes will nein considerable loss to the Hawke's Bay Education Board.
