LABOUR TROUBLES IN AUSTRALIA.
SYDNEY STRIKE SETTLED. Received April 12, 5.57 p.rr. SYDNEY, April 12. The strike has been settled. The only point precluding a settlement last night was in connection with the Merchant Service Guild. This was arranged to-day, when agreements were signed and ratified by both parties. The coastal steamers resume running forthwith. The settlement provides that the coastal companies shall carry out their agreement with the men taken on during the strike. Those formerly employed are to return as opportunity oilers. The Newcastle Company is to have the right to retain its present employees at Newcastle and Morpeth, provided the coastal rates are paid in lieu of a weekly wage. Preference to unionists isto operate after the present employees have joined the Union or left the companies' employ. The engineers agree that the coastal owners shall man at their discretion not more than six steamers between the three fleets with engineers not exceeding twelve. The remainder of th? steamers are to be manned solely by members of the Institute of Marine Engineers, who will also have preference in future vacancies. None of the present engineer employees are to be retained after the termination of the present agreement. The Merchant Service Guild stipulated that all steamers now out of commission shall be manned by members of the Guild, who will also fill vacancies as they occur. The agreement fixes the number of permanent hands on the various wharves.
