RACING.
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., April 5. A large number of visiting horses arrived on Saturday for the first day of the Autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club on Tuesday. The tracks at Awapuni are in splendid order, meeting with the universal admiration of all visiting trainers. Greenleaf, Maid of Astolat, Soultline have been scratched for all engagements. The first'named split a pastern when doing a trial at Ashhurst on Saturday, ending her racing career. The probable starters for the Manawatu Stakes are:—Vasa 8.7, Muritai 8.0, Husbandman 7.7, Aborigine 7.4, Diabolo 6.11, Elysium 6.9. WELLINGTON POLO CLUB MEETING. BY TELEOIUPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION WELLINGTON, April 4. The Wellington Polo Club held a sports meeting at Miramar Racecourse, this afternoon. The principal events resulted:—Polo Cup: Jemima 1, Chatteress 2, Zephyr 3. Hurdles: Vixen 1, Paradox 2, Whalebone 3. TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland.") Weights for the Wairarapa meeting will appear on Thursday next. At Tauherenikau good work is being done by Strathcona, Kelso, Warlock, Aboriginal and Sen Sim. The latter is in splendid condition, and should run well at the Manawatu meeting this week. The course and grounds generally are looking splendid, and will be at their best for the Eastar meeting.
Riflemaia was put into work again last week, and is looking well after her two months spell. She is nominated for the principal events at the Wellington meeting. Tumut, also a member of Mr McGrath's team, has joined the active brigade. He is a very nice mover on the training track, but may need time before he can show to advantage in public. Strathcona will be put to hurdle racing before long. He is a natural jumper, and being speedy on the fiat, should pay hia way at the winter fixtures, if his owner decides to race him in the big hurdle races. Another addition to the ranks of hurdlers is the Sir Lancelot gelding, Oblivion, who is now \ being schooled at Opaki. He jumps in good style, and if able to stay may race prominently during the wincer. The entrance, to the straight at Tauherenikau has been widened. There will now be less crowding at this corner, consequently there should be little chance of accidents occurring. Narcotic was ridden in the Nelson Cup by P. Langstone, who won on the Lethe gelding last year. Narcotic will, probably, be among the contestants at the Wairarapa meeting. _ _
Elevation has been backed for the Doncaster Handicap to win several thousands, and now ranks as second favourite.
The Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting will open at Awapuni to-morrow. The principal events for the first day are the Manawatu Stakes, Champion Hack Plate, and Longburn Handicap. Among the contestants for the Stakes will be Mr G. G. Stead's Elysium and Golden Slipper, Sir G. Clifford's Glenculloch and Pleetfoot, Mr Highden's Vasa, a recent winner in Maid of Astolat, and Mr E. J. Watt's Aborigine. The best performers engaged in the Champion Hack are Mon Ami, Ikon, Carissima and Daisy Paul.
