NARROW ESCAPE OF A WATCHMAN.
DUNEDIN, April 4. i A night-watchman named WilJiam ( Simmons had a narrow escape from 1 being roasted to death at midnight on Thursday. Simmonds went into a moveable tool-hut containing fuse, tarred oakum, sacks and tools, at Glen Road, Mornington, where drainage works are being carried out, and lay down on soine sacks to sleep. He lit his pipe after going into the hut, and went to sleep with an oil stove or heater beside him. He woke up snon after, and found the place burning fiercely. He gained the doorway through the flames, but experienced difficulty in opening it, and was very severely burned about the legs, face, hands and head. He was found in the roadway by some neighbours who heard his screams, and was taken to the hospital, where he now lies. The hut and contents were valued at £lO, and were totally destroyed.
