THE MISSING CROWN JEWELS.
MR BIRRELL INDIGNANT. Received Aw-il 2, 9.55 p.m. LONDON, April 2. The Hon. A. Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland, speaking in the House of Commons, indignantly denounced the cowardly and baseless falsehood associating Lord Haddo with the mysterious disappearance from Dublin Castle of the Crown jewels. About 3.30 p.m. on July 6th, an official connected with the Office of Arms, Dublin Castle, had occasion to put some article into a safe in which the Crown jewels belonging to the Order of St. Patrick had been kept, but on trying to unlock the door he discovered that it had been previonsly unlocked, and on testing the lever the door readily opened. The Crown jewels were missing. The last time on which this safe is known to have been opened was on June 11th last, when the jewels were inspected and found to be correct, and there appears to be no doubt but that the door was locked when the inspection was over. There was no mark on the safe to indicate that any violence was used to open it, nor was there any indication to sliow that access to the building was obtained otherwise than by regular means.
